{"id":1970,"date":"2016-12-12T09:40:02","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T14:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/?p=1970"},"modified":"2016-12-12T22:02:29","modified_gmt":"2016-12-13T03:02:29","slug":"our-lady-of-guadalupe-triumphs-over-evil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/?p=1970","title":{"rendered":"Our Lady of Guadalupe Triumphs over Evil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/guadalupe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1971 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/guadalupe.jpg\" alt=\"guadalupe\" width=\"114\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a>We celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe today, a commemoration elevated to a feast on the eve of the Third Millennium by Pope John Paul II, who also declared\u00a0 her patroness of all of \u2018America\u2019, south, central, and north.\u00a0 Appearing to (now saint) Juan Diego in 1531, while the Protestant \u2018Reformation\u2019 was wreaking havoc\u00a0 across the Atlantic in Europe, the Virgin tenderly asked \u2018Juanito\u2019 as she called him, and through him asked all of us, \u2018Am I not your mother?\u2019, to which there is really only one answer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yes, she is our Mother, even in the midst of all the chaos, evil and mayhem of this world. Yesterday, on Gaudete Sunday, a time for rejoicing in the Lord in this subdued season of Advent, a Catholic Church was bombed in Cairo, with more than two dozen killed, many more injured, many of them women and children.\u00a0 It is difficult to quantify \u2018evil\u2019, but this at least qualifies as a good amount of it.\u00a0 Alas, the voluntarism of Islam (may we say, certain strains of Islam, but of its essential, original and radical nature?) wherein the decrees of Allah are to be carried out regardless of reason, mercy and charity&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can only \u2018rejoice\u2019 that the souls of the victims are now rejoicing in heaven, but we must also have sorrow, and offer prayers, for the victims and, most of all, the perpetrators of this heinous act.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We know not how many souls Our Lady has brought into the Church through her miraculous image, which\u00a0 sort of \u2018floats\u2019 on the <em>tilma<\/em> or cloak, maintains a temperature of 98.6 degrees; scientists have detected a heartbeat, and there is in her eyes, detectible only by modern microcopic analysis, reflected the image of the bishop and someone else, as they likely appeared to her as she appeared to them on this day in December, 1531. No scientist, as yet, has any explanation for how the image was placed on, or is maintained, on the fragile tilma, which by any law we know should have disintegrated centuries ago.
