{"id":1718,"date":"2016-09-27T12:07:16","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T16:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/?p=1718"},"modified":"2016-09-27T21:09:59","modified_gmt":"2016-09-28T01:09:59","slug":"a-debacle-of-a-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/?p=1718","title":{"rendered":"A Debacle of a Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/clinton-trump.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1719 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/clinton-trump-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"clinton-trump\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/clinton-trump-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/clinton-trump.jpg 316w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I watched a bit of the \u2018debate\u2019 last night between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and I use that term reservedly.\u00a0 A debate is meant to be a measured and regulated argument, based on reasoned principles, and not a bandying back and forth of scoring \u2018points\u2019, of braggadaccio, looking for weaknesses and straw men in the opponent, of self-congratulation, sound bites, smirks, finger pointing, figurative and otherwise, and, what was most annoying, skirting and ignoring the questions of the moderator (whether they were to one\u2019s taste or not), \u00a0to say nothing of droning on over the time limit, yelling over not just the moderator, but each other.\u00a0 It was bombast, spectacle, and playing upon the emotions and the <em>a priori<\/em>, unreasoned biases of one side or the other. \u00a0My \u00a0mind began to melt, so off it went (the debate, not my mind, I hope).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have we as a society become so unhinged?\u00a0 Is this what reasoned discourse looks like in our era? \u00a0Read accounts of the the sober and clear debates of yesteryear, say, between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas, where issues were discussed at length, with all the requisite and necessary nuances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As per <a href=\"http:\/\/johnpaulmeenan.com\/?p=1667\">my recent post<\/a>, is the age of the Internet, of \u2018smart\u2019 phones and texting, of hashtags and YouTube, reducing us to intellectual barbarism?\u00a0 Ideas have consequences, certainly, but even worse is the lack of ideas, the incapacity or outright refusal to think clearly, to get to the roots of our modern malaise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Saint Thomas Aquinas declared that the hallmark of a developed intellect is the capacity to make the proper distinctions, which allow us to see things as they really are.\u00a0 <em>Adequatio rei et intellectus<\/em>, is how Thomas defined truth, following Aristotle, a \u2018conformity between the intellect and reality\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How I wished, in the few minutes I did watch Trump and Clinton, they would make such distinctions: in the U.S. relations with Russia, in the quagmire of the Middle East, the spiralling debt-load of the United States, and why they cannot continue to carry their current \u2018obligations\u2019, at home and overseas.\u00a0\u00a0 These were real questions requiring real, and fully reasoned, answers.\u00a0 But none were forthcoming, just chest beating and talking points. \u00a0Trump with his \u2018winning disposition\u2019 and Hillary with her sense of smug entitlement, make rather pathetic figures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Where, oh where, were the more fundamental\u00a0 questions, on life and family, and the disintegration of both in American life, without which no other \u2018questions\u2019 can be solved?\u00a0 Our modern media does not want to touch these with a hundred foot microphone. Yet as the recently canonized Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta taught a few decades ago in her own soft, yet commanding, voice (I would not mind seeing <em>her<\/em> debate Clinton):<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>But I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a war against the child &#8211; a direct killing of the innocent child &#8211; murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?&#8230;Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching the people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.
